“Stay golden, Ponyboy” is a quote from an iconic moment in the book The Outsiders by local Tulsan S.E. Hinton. When this book made it to the big screen, the movie was filmed at multiple locations here in Tulsa. So the book, as well as the movie, holds a very special place in the hearts of many of Tulsa’s people. I knew for this piece to be successful, I had to include an image of the Outsiders house. To stick with the gold theme, I also wanted to feature the Golden Driller. The Driller is one of Tulsa’s many landmarks that cannot be missed. Last, and certainly not least, to make sure this piece was as gold and cohesive as possible, I set the Tulsa flag in the background. This not only helped my design look complete while sticking with the theme, but it’s really what gave me my color palette. I could then bring some red into the bricks on the house and some blue onto the Driller for high-contrast shading. The design was good, but more importantly, the design was Tulsa.
